Before going to the Southwest, Andrew Dasburg’s interest in avant-garde styles took him from New York to Paris. There he was introduced to the Paul Cezanne’s landscapes and Pablo Picasso’s cubist abstractions, which he later eagerly applied to the distinctive adobe architecture in New Mexico. Dasburg first came toTaos at the invitation of Mabel Dodge Luhan, whom he met in New York. This painting depicts the view from Dasburg's house in Taos, which includes Taos Mountain in the distance. He relied on the planar abstract of Cezanne to depict the adobe buildings and rugged topography of northern New Mexico.
