Instrumental in defining the role of the conceptual artist was Lucy Lippard who wrote Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object from 1966 to 1972. Lippard, a New Mexico resident, gifted this work to the New Mexico Museum of Art in 1999. She is a noted scholar of conceptual, feminist and multi-cultural art. Her most recent publication, Undermining: A Wild Ride Through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West reflects her interest in land use in the American West. (Scully, 2017).
