BiographyPhilip V. Augustin was originally a western landscape photographer, best known for his extensive series of images of Yellowstone National Park in winter. He moved to Santa Fe in 2007 to be part of its vibrant photography community and soon shifted toward more abstract subject matter, such as shadows on adobe walls, scratches on stainless steel utility boxes, and architectural details such as light fixtures and railings. Seeking to sever the connection with identifiable subject matter, he began working exclusively in the studio to construct non-representational photographs. Printing in the darkroom was central to his practice and he found that making a defocused print from a negative with a photogram component gave his compositions a disorienting illusion of dimensionality. His deep conversance with the medium of photography enabled this increasing experimentation, eventually resulting in large-scale installation pieces.
