Cancellation chops were used by printmakers to deface their woodcut blocks and engraving plates. This chop is a steel rod with the words and image “cancelled” over Bauman’s “monogram” cut into the end of the rod. The image appears to have been cut by a pantograph process. A hammer was used to strike the rod and emboss the image on the end of the rod into the soft woodcut block to indicate that it could no longer be printed. This insured that the limited number of prints remained limited, and that the blocks could be used for educational purposes to explain the woodcut process.
