Sung Jae Choi is a noted South Korean ceramic artist for his engagement with the tradition of buncheong ware, which dates from the late 14th to the late 16th century. Buncheong, meaning “powder green,” is characterized by a painterly quality that mimics calligraphy of ink paintings, through the “painting” of imagery is with fingers or bamboo into white slip over a dark clay body. Often a landscape is evoked, in this case through the appearance of reeds and ducks in the water. Choi is one of a number of Korean artists after the Korean War who began reintroducing buncheong into contemporary Korean ceramic traditions.

Choi approaches the white slip as a painter does a gesture on the canvas, but his technique involves a subtractive process, or a wiping away of slip, rather than an additive process.
