Plate 50: La Soldadera (from the portfolio Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana)
eMuseum Notes
Historical text from the accompanying booklet reads as: La mujer tiene especial lugar en la historia revolucionaria. Alberto Morales Jimenez.
Translation: Women have a special place in the history of the Revolution. Our glorious soldadera (female soldier) accompanied the troops even during the toughest of times. There was not one “Adelita”—the beautiful Adela Maldonado [sic]—there were many. Several belonged to each battalion. Her virtues gave moral strength to the rebels and when it came to danger she grabbed a .30-30 to fire on enemy forces. Translated by Aída Wester, Intern 2017.
