For her series Water Flow: Under the Colorado River, Velo traveled from the headwaters of the river in Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado through five states and into Mexico to capture the shifting nature of this life-sustaining force of nature. Working at night at various locations along the route, the artist submerged color photo paper in the water before briefly exposing it with a flashlight. The combination of the photographic chemistry with the minerals, salts, and contaminants in the water join together to create a portrait of the river at a specific place and time, without using a camera.
