Wounded Knee is on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota and is known for an 1890 attack by a U.S. Calvalry regiment during which they killed nearly 300 residents. The site was designated a Historial National Landmark in 1965 and continues to be a potent symbol of violent colonization.
