eMuseum Notes
A native of Florida who is now living in New Mexico, Young noticed that attitudes toward the South are complicated and sometimes ambivalent outside that region. In her series South, she specifically explores white male culture as a way of reflecting on the men she grew up with and how that shaped her life. In this picture, the photographer is as much a subject of scrutiny as the boy in the striped shirt.
