Alberto Giacometti began making single elongated human figures in the late 1940s and went on to explore the full-scale human form in space and in relationship to other figures. His tall, stick-figure beings stride forward on outsized feet that either ground them or hamper them as they move into an uncertain fugure, appearing both resilient and vulnerable. Here, Herbert Matter photographs a later addition to that series that is an imposing 72 inches tall but instead of showing its scale or motion, he focuses on the roughened head of this Everyman figure.
