eMuseum Notes
Bradford Hansen-Smith lived in Santa Fe throughout the 1970s-80s, during which time he experimented with sculpture, working with alternative materials such as inner-tube rubber and found metal machine parts. Creating surreal and sci-fi like creatures, Hansen-Smith pushed the boundaries of human representation. In 1984, an exhibition of his small bronze sculptures, including this piece, was held at St. John's College representing work from over 20 years of his career. The artist likened these sculptures to toys, expressing his regret for not having previously paid enough attention to the whimsy and innovation that toys possess.
