During the early years of Cady Wells's career, he experimented with a variety of approaches under the tutelage of his mentor, Andrew Dasburg. Dasburg used trees as a means of exploring formal ideas and likely encouraged Wells to do the same. Tree/Lane is likely a representation of one of the trees in Taos, although Wells was less interested in details than in emotional expression through line and color.
