This oil study may have been painted along the Rio Grande River, which runs nearby Taos. Victor Higgins and his colleagues in the Taos art colony were drawn to the Rio Grande and the gorge it had cut into the desert landscape. Higgins captured the salient details of the scene, likely to use it in another painting.
