Emuseum Notes

Diego Giacometti (1902-1985) was an artist and designer in his own right as well as the brother of sculptor Alberto Giacometti. The two had a close relationship and shared a studio in Paris, making Diego available for the role of model. Alberto made a series of sculpture busts of Diego in the early 1950s. Herbert Matter’s photograph offers two views of this piece to emphasize Giacometti’s surprising treatment of the head, which is extremely minimal in the frontal view and acutely triangular in profile.
