The denuded tree and tonal palette of Tree Trunk (Bleak Tree) differs markedly from the paintings Cady Wells produced only five years earlier. Wells may have sought a mysticism in his work akin to the artists Albert Pinkham Ryder and and Ralph Albert Blakelock, both of whom were lauded by later American artists for the spirituality of their work.
