In February 1918, Georgia O'Keeffe moved to San Antonio in February 1918 to recuperateate from an illness and took a leave of absence from her teaching responsibilities at West Texas State Normal College. The subsequent weeks would be prdocutive for O'Keeffe. House with Tree - Red was part of a large body of work she produced before leaving Texas for New York City in June. She used a meandering contour in watercolor to depict the house, sky, and foliage in a simplified yet vivid palette.
